*****SOLD - Private Collection - February, 2010*****
This was a commissoned piece. Pointilism was the technique used, and fine-tipped Sharpies was the medium. Superman, "The Man of Steel", was the subject. This piece took a little less than 19 hours. At the rate in which I was placing my dots, approximately 225,000 dots are on the page (give or take a few thousand). Completed February, 2010. 18"x24" Ink on Strathmore paper.

This was one of my first attempts at making a tessellation. I have always admired M.C. Escher's play on perspective as well as his manipulation of tessellating shapes. Here is an easy way to create a tessellation: Take a perfect square (any size) that is cut from an index card and cut a shape out of one side. Using a variety of methods, a person can then affix that cut piece onto any of the other three sides. This procedure can be also be done more than once to the same square. If done correctly, the new shape will interlock pefectly to itself, over and over again. But that is just half of the problem, which made Escher a genius. Coming up with an image in your head that fits into those shapes is the hard part. After coming up with this shape, I envisioned the head of a pirate. While turning the shape, I also saw a pirate ship. After some pen & ink was applied, this is what came out............................
