"It Gets Through Buckner!"

1986 World Series.  Game 6.  The Boston Red Sox lead the New York Mets 3 games to 2.  They lead Game 6 by a score of 5-4.  Bob Stanley, pitcher for the Sox, has Mookie Wilson down tot he last strike.  THE SOX WERE ONE STRIKE AWAY FROM THEIR FIRST WORLD TITLE SINCE 1918!!  Stanley then threw a 3-2 pitch to Wilson.  Vin Scully, the legendary announcer calling the play-by-play:

"So the winning run is at second base, with two outs, three and two to Mookie Wilson.  Little roller up along first; Behind the bag! It gets through Buckner"! Here comes Knight and the Mets win it!"

Bill Buckner, first baseman for the Red Sox, had just given the Mets Game 6 - and a second life - in the Series.  Even on that fateful night in '86, fans across the nation recognized the importance of the error as possibly being one of the costliest in sports history.  Two days later, the Mets assured Buckner of his place in history by taking Game 7 and sending the Red Sox back to Boston in stunned silence.

Throughout history, art has been used to record the events taking place.  Wouldn't it be neat to see if I can use art to CHANGE history?  This is one of those pieces that people will look at on a wall, and they really won't understand it........until they see the process in which I made it.  There was no other way to do it justice.  Completed March, 2010.  18"x24" Pastels on Strathmore paper.   ****Keep checking back - I have some video footage of the work in progress that I will be uploading very soon!****

For this piece, I wondered if I could use art to briefly change history.  So I decided to turn my old Damon jersey tee into a Buckner uniform:

I assumed the first baseman's position:

Then I used my pastels and started putting myself in Buckner's shoes - watching the moment go between my legs.............

I started realizing it wasn't looking too good for the Sox.............

So did I change history?  Sorry Red Sox Nation.......I tried, but that ball still GOT THROUGH BUCKNER, & Ray Knight and Gary Carter still celebrated a Mets victory:

Adding my signature (which has a pretty neat upside-down effect)...........

A final look..............
